Benefits and Challenges of Assessment & Diagnosis
Diagnosis is a description of a condition with grouped symptoms that an individual may experience. It can help clarify the reason behind the symptoms, but it can also present some hurdles that may interfere with the effectiveness of the diagnosis.

Benefits of Assessment & Diagnosis:
  • Provides an overall understanding of ability and behaviour
  • Provides knowledge and information on how to cope with/treat and work with limitations/exceptionalities
  • Guides personalized learning needs,  interventions and work adaptations
  • Provides access to additional supports, program and insurance
  • Provides insight into strengths and weaknesses
Challenges of Assessment & Diagnosis:
  • Labels and stigmas - placing undue limitations on individuals
  • Diagnosis indentity- instead of the diagnosis being something you have; people often believe the diagnosis is who they are
  • May become an excuse to avoid change or take responsibility
  • Misconception - not having a diagnosis means there is nothing wrong
